Well actually
Heather and her Sidekick.
Two things:
First, when you sign up for classes from now on you’ll see Contrology instead of simply Mat Pilates. This is something we’ve wanted to do since the beginning, but thought we should start with the name people are familiar with, and that’s without a doubt Pilates.
However, the practice that drew in Martha Graham, George Balanchine, Katharine Hepburn wasn’t called Pilates. Joseph Pilates called the practice Contrology. This isn’t a pedantic peeve, it’s about the foundations of the practice, and the quality standards you can expect when you come to The Dojo for classes.
Contrology, or Pilates, isn’t just any set of movements that look like strange sideways ballet. Even more than the original 34 moves Joe Pilates described to make up Contrology, it’s the underlying movement principles that lead to the positive qualitative difference in our bodies that Pilates is known for. More and more we are seeing things called Pilates, that look similar, that simply don’t have the underlying principles in tact. The principles are the thing, and that’s what we offer you.
Second, after experimenting with different class sizes over the past 4 years to find the sweet spot between group energy and providing more valuable instruction for each person in class, we’ve landed on 8 spots for Contrology and Panther HIIT, and 6 for Panther Strength since it’s a weighted class.
